Michael Coteau has dedicated his life to public service, advocacy and fighting for people in our city, province and country. First elected as a Member of Parliament in 2021, Michael brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as a provincial representative and a local school board trustee.

Michael’s work in these roles has left a lasting impact, particularly in advancing social services, promoting inclusivity, and celebrating our diverse cultural heritage.
Before entering provincial politics, Michael was a dedicated school board trustee for the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), elected in 2003, 2006, and 2010. As a trustee, he championed initiatives for student nutrition, advocated for community use of public spaces, and supported the integration of technology in education.
He holds degrees in Political Science and Canadian History from Carleton University. Before entering politics, Michael worked as an ESL instructor, curriculum developer, community organizer, and later as the Marketing Manager for ABC Life Literacy, where he spearheaded Family Literacy Day across Canada. He also served as an Executive Director of Alpha Plus, a national literacy organization focused on adult education.
Today, Michael is not only your voice in Ottawa but also a national leader. He serves on the Standing Committee for Canadian Heritage (CHPC) as well as the Standing Committee of Human Resources, Skills and Social Development, and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (HUMA). He is also the proud Chair of Canada’s Parliamentary Black Caucus and the Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association (CAAF).
For almost 20 years, Michael has lived in Scarborough Woburn with his wife Lori and their two daughters. His commitment to the Scarborough community is deeply rooted in his experiences as a father, a neighbor, and a lifelong resident.
